I should be doing the homework I forgot to do…instead, here is a rant for your enjoyment. Well, not quite a rant, but a comment on community.

I recently went to (LiveJournal, as I read several online friend’s journals there. Now, you can mark certain entries private, so that only friends could read them. That’s cool. So I figured I’d click on “Create LiveJournal” and make an account, just so that they could add me as a friend and I could read that stuff.

Nu-uh. Doesn’t happen. You can either pay for it (which I’m not going to do. I have patchmonkey.net, gaijeans.com, yggdrasil.us, etc., if I want to pay for something), or you can ask for an “Activation Code”. They claim that it helps maintain community, which I’m sure it does. But screw that. I’m not paying, and if I have to go beg for a code, I won’t. I’ve got my tight jams right here.

In the meantime, however, I should go do my homework.

If an expert marketing staff was all that was necessary to successfully bring a product to market, we’d all be eating McRibs, watching Chevy Chase, dressing Hasidic chic, and listening to Hootie and the Blowfish.

America is unique because it has the power to be an empire and has chosen not to be one. That choice wasn’t merely a hard-headed calculation of our self-interest. And it wasn’t an accident either. It was a moral choice, reinforced from one generation to the next. But because so many other nations failed that test, they assume nobody could pass it.

Gotta love Jonah Goldberg

One day, down on his luck, the screenwriter Michael Arlen went to NYC in 1944. To drown his sorrows, he went to the famous restaurant “21.” In the lobby, he ran into Sam Goldwyn, who offered the somewhat impractical advice that he should buy racehorses. At the bar, Arlen met Louis B. Meyer, an old acquaintance, who asked him what were his plans for the future.

“I was just talking to Sam Goldwyn…” began Arlen.

“How much did he offer you?” interrupted Mayer.

“Not enough,” he replied evasively.

“Would you take fifteen thousand for thirty weeks?” asked Meyer.

“Yes,” said Arlen.

KFC customer gets pot in bucket of chicken

MILL VALLEY, Calif. - No, it’s not the Colonel’s secret recipe of eleven herbs and spices. A customer at a Northern California KFC got two baggies of pot in his chicken order.

The man had asked for extra biscuits.

Police say the man returned the marijuana to the KFC and got his biscuits. The customer then called the cops.

Marin County deputies arrested Carlos Ayala and say he may have been selling weed out of the drive-up window.

Authorities believe Ayala would slip the marijuana into a to-go order when the customer used the right code word.
